For people who have minimal experience on moving water and/or have not had recent instruction. Three-hour evening classroom session with videos and lectures covering equipment, safety, river features and paddling techniques. Full day Saturday flat water session emphasizing wet exits, strokes, safety, self-rescues, and eskimo rolling. Full day Sunday session on a class 1-2 water river (tentatively the Tuckaseegee River). You must attend both the dry and flat water sessions to participate in the white water river portion of the course.
Date: June 18,19,20
Three day class with ACA certified instructors.
Price $90 for the class and includes a one year GCA membership.
Compare that to other places that charge between $250-$449 for the same ACA class.
This is even less that some one day starter classes!
If you don't have your own kayak, we can help you rent one from a local outfitter.
We will be splitting this to include a "Recreational Kayak" class. This is similar, to the "Whitewater Kayak" class, but will be held on much milder class 1 river.
Because there is a charge for this class, your space will not be confirmed until your payment is received. Refunds are available with 10 days notice, or if a replacement can be found.
Space is limited. The size limit on this event has been temporarily expanded remove the waiting list of people that want to take the class. Once the classes are full the OACS meetup size will drop to 1 with a waiting list.

I would greatly appreciate access to any photos taken on this trip.
I'm looking forward to hearing how things went on Monday. There are two choices. A) I thought I was going to die! B) OMG, I had no idea how many things I didn't know!
Planning on camping at Smoky Mtn. Meadows Campground tomorrow and Saturday, too.
There is a pavillion in the middle. Steve Cramer is the instructor. He is a tall thin guy, about 55 years old.
I'm camping at the Smokey Mtn. Meadows Campground. Where do we meet there on Sat. at 9am and who is our contact?
I see that the whitewater learning center rents solo kayaks with all the gear for $70 for the weekend and provides foam supports to strap it to your car.
I'm in the same proverbial boat as Lesli. I can arrange to rent a WW kayak but how will I move it around? Tie it to the roof of my Honda Accord?
Kevin, That is correct. The class will be at Smokey Mountain Meadows campground. The flatwater section will be Saturday on Lake Fontaina which is a few miles away.
I'm understanding that there will be no Friday night session and the classroom and flatwater practice will be on Saturday. Where will we be doing the flatwater practice?
Is anyone else renting their kayak? I need to rent and then have no way to transport it. Does anyone have a rack who can help me transport it?
Also, anyone want to carpool? I live in Smyrna.
The first meeting is 9:00 AM Saturday June 19 at Smoky Mountain Meadows.
There will be an email going out soon to everybody signed up.
Will be we getting an update soon on where both portions of the class are being held? Also, I will need to rent a WW kayak and need info on where I can do that.
At $90 this class will sell out soon. Check www.gapaddle.com for more trips and classes. Space is limited.
Make it payable to the GCA.
Sure! If you used GCA membership form address it would go to the treasurer. He would sit on the form for up to one month. By sending the checks directly to the instructors, they know how many people are attending. One week before the class the checks are deposited. If too many people sign up, those checks will be returned. The addresses listed here are the ones to use. I hope that helped!
Second question:
Should the checks be made payable to the GCA or to the person listed on the address?
Would you please provide a little clarification?
Do we disregard the address on the GCA membership form and send our completed form and payment to the appropriate address given above?
