This is a GIRLS ONLY camping trip. Sorry guys. Also NO children or pets are allowed on this trip. We will be camping at the Jekyll Island Campground for 3 nights. Arriving on Friday, May 28, 2010 and leaving Monday, May 31, 2010.
NOTE: We are posting this email now to make everyone aware this meetup is planned so they can think about and make arrangements to attend. The RSVP date will not open until April 1st. When you RSVP yes beginning April 1st for this meetup payment is expected at the time of RSVP. Once you pay there are NO refunds so make sure you are able to attend before you RSVP yes and pay. The only thing you will be required to pay upfront will be the camping fee. All the other fees you will pay individually when we arrive for the events. A tentative list of fees will be posted at the bottom. By April 1st we will have all fees finalized.
The tentative itinerary subject to change as need be:
Friday: Arrive at the Jekyll Island Campground around 1:00 and set up camp. Rent bicycles. Head over to The Georgia Sea Turtle Center and learn more about the Sea Turtles. Then at night head over to the beach so hopefully we can see some female sea turtles laying some eggs. From May through August, under cover of darkness, female loggerhead sea turtles swim ashore, make their way across the sand, dig their nests and lay their eggs. Designated a threatened species by state and federal law, loggerhead sea turtles have found safe haven on Jekyll Island. Their nests, tucked among the dunes of Jekyll Island's clean, white beach, have made the island a major site for conservation and education. Approaching Sea Turtles is against the law so we will view the sea turtles from a safe distance.
Saturday: We will continue the bicycle tour of the island. Then we rent kayaks and we will take a 3 hour guided tour through the Island’s salt marshes and estuarial waters. This will be a great way to observe native birds, fish and other coastal creatures in their natural habitat. When we are not biking/kayaking we can lay out on the beach, swim, or whatever it is we want to do.
Sunday: We will head over to St Mary's by 9:45 a.m. to take the ferry over to Cumberland Island to spend the day exploring the island. When we get off the ferry we will NOT be taking the guided tour of the Dungeness area. We will head left off of the ferry to explore the island, hang out on the beach. Search for shark teeth/seashells.
Carpool locations will be posted closer to the time of the event.
Monday: Pack up camp and head home.
Tentative List of Fees subject to change: For now, remember the only fee required up front at the time of RSVP's will be the camping fee.
Your event fee includes ferrying to the island and camping.
Other Activities are optional and the cost can be paid on the trip:
Bicycles: $11.00 per day
Kayaking: $50.00 for a single kayak $75.00 for a double
Cumberland Ferry: $17.00
Cumberland Island Entrance Fee: $4.00 per person
Jekyll Island Park Entrance Fee: $5.00 per day -- the only time the Jekyll Island park pass will expire is when we will leave to go to Cumberland. Jekyll Island is a State Park so if you have a State Park pass that will cover this fee for you.
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center: $6.00
Because reservations must be made and paid in advance the RSVP deadline is February 5th. Spots are limited to 10. Absolutely NO REFUNDS for this event.
